Getting to know the Movement

GETTING TO KNOW THE MOVEMENT

RENEWAL

The lands of Kanto, Johto, and Sevii seem like utopias at first glance. Plentiful resources, sprawling cities, and advanced technologies seem to serve up a sweet treat of an existence, and the storybook relationship enjoyed by the citizens and their Pokémon companions is the perfect cherry on-top. Like with all Sundaes, though, the longer you stare at it the more it starts to melt. Beneath the happy-go-lucky exterior the day-to-day existence of people within the Regions is one of unnecessary hardship, outright danger, and a staggering disparity of wealth and resources between the common people and the social elite.

For those who stay wholly within the confines of their hometowns this disparity might go unnoticed, but for those who take to the roads in any capacity it becomes impossible to avoid. Step foot outside of a town or city and you'll immediately be greeted by wilderness. Dirt roads and hiking trails await on nearly every major route, with obstacles ranging from miles-long tunnels to outright mountains dotting the landscape. For the average layman even the most forgiving route is akin to a full-on expedition rather than a commute, and the ever-present threat of changing weather conditions and wild Pokémon do nothing to lessen this. Difficult as it is for the average joe, though, it's nothing compared to the barrier this presents to those of poor health or advanced years. To them, the prospect of travelling is quite literally gambling with their lives.

This draws into sharp-relief the state of emergency services within the Regions, as the many extreme terrains that travelers are expected to cross in order to simply go from town-to-town are such that coming to harm or becoming trapped would almost certainly be a death sentence. Helicopters and motor vehicles are a part of everyday life but, yet, the byways are built in such a way as to render all but the most accommodating of thoroughfares completely inaccessible to them. Heavy reliance on Pokémon for transportation is also a recipe for disaster, as inexperienced and incapable riders are expected to undertake high-altitude flights or open-water crossings with nothing but the natural aptitude of their Pokémon as a safeguard. Adding in the level of unnecessary bloat and complication that these single-rider options present to the duties of both mail delivery and first-responders, it begs the question of why they're encouraged so strongly when far safer and more accessible methods of travel are so tightly regulated.

Miles of modern highway stretch across the Regions with hundreds of motor vehicles in traffic every day, but somehow the common citizen is made to wade through knee-high brush if they want to go more than ten feet outside their home. This is because licenses to operate motor vehicles are throttled to such a tight extent that only large corporations and government agencies are allowed to make use of them while the private citizen is forced to make do with inefficient, unsafe, and outright inferior methods simply because they lack the capitol to grease the right palms. Ferries and trains, both methods of public transit that could save hundreds of manhours of both delivery and travel time, exist in only the most limited capacities and the bus networks employed by other Regions have been completely passed-over. Even the miraculous convenience of the warp network is handcuffed by inefficiency, requiring its users to have physically visited the intended location before they can make the jump and effectively reinforcing the very problem that made the network such a convenience in the first place. For those of sufficient power or privilege, though, these rules don't exist. For them, a location that would take others days of braving the elements is a simple helicopter ride away and any commercial needs that might arise have the benefit of unrestricted access to the motorways. It is, to put it simply, a world out-of-balance.

The people of Kanto, Johto, and Sevii have long been fed an illusion of plenty to sedate them to the clear divide between themselves and their "betters". The wealthy and powerful are given free reign to grow their empires, enjoying technology and innovations entirely unavailable to the public, while artificial hurdles keep the lion's share of the citizenry from ever rising in status themselves. Drip-fed a steady stream of minor luxuries to keep them placid the majority of people within the Regions simply resign themselves to existing rather than ever actually following their dreams, and those who do reach for something more are able to be deflected harmlessly down the road of false-adventure that the Pokémon League presents. The youth of this land don't grow up dreaming of being future leaders or brilliant innovators but, instead, are made to look with starry-eyes towards an occupation that all but guarantees they never pose a threat to the status quo. The innate drive of the human heart was never meant to be imprisoned however, regardless of how gilded the cage may be, and it's the solemn goal of the Renewal Movement to help build a world that fuels those fires of ingenuity rather than smothering them.

The dream of every Renewalist is for the Regions to one day be a place where every man, woman, and child is master of their own destiny. Rather than the veiled methods of control and manufactured hardships seen in the world today it would be a world where the playing field is truly equal. Where resources are put back to where they belong: benefitting the people. Safe and sustainable roads, an infrastructure built upon the actual needs of those who use it, and a land where everyone can achieve their dreams through hard work are all goals the Renewal Movement looks to make a reality. It's time for the people of the Regions to break free from their lives of benevolent captivity and build a land of the truly free. Through strong public outreach, passionate lobbying, and Renewalist-funded public works we intend to send a message to the establishment that it's time to wipe the slate clean. No more double standards, where it's one set of rules for the elites and one for the average joe. No more manufactured mediocrity, where amenities that should be basic rights are dangled above us like pipe dreams of wealth and status. No more stagnation. It's time for Renewal.

📅 Travel Journal

Week 1

February 19th - February 25th:
Awakening in a strange world Armstrong would find himself thrust into the basic training of a bizarre criminal organization. Coming to terms both with not being dead as he previously would have thought himself to be and having been thrust into a world that he can readily recognize as being the setting of the Pokémon video games Armstrong would have his hands full. He wasn't the only castaway thrown into Rocket Boot Camp though, and the human goliath would find himself partnered-up with a haughty young man throughout the duration of the training. Though the two had little in-common by the time the training had completed they had at least formed a tentative agreement to watch each other's backs, allowing them to pass the final crucible and graduate as fully-fledged Agents.

Pokémon Roster:
Sam (Rufflet): Was LV15 and leveled to LV23
Monday (Meowth): Was LV1 and leveled to LV9
Week 2

February 26th - March 4th:
Having completed training Armstrong was subjected to a few of the ever-present PowerPoint classes breaking down the nitty-gritty of specific jobs and missions available to him now that he'd "graduated" but, despite paying attention to the options, was only really concerned with getting out from the underground bunkers he'd been largely confined to since arrival and finding out what exactly the world he'd been sucked-into was like. Emerging out into the city above he would busy himself with getting some actually wearable street clothes and then availing himself of just about every relevant book the Goldenrod Library system could provide.

Pokémon Roster:
Sam (Rufflet): LV23
Monday (Alolan Meowth): LV9
Week 3

February 26th - March 4th:
Getting himself into a good groove in-terms of absorbing information Armstrong was rapidly acquainting himself with the ins-and-outs of how the Pokémon world conducted itself. Growing increasingly frustrated with the bizarre disparity he was encountering in how society seemed to have developed in some ways yet stagnated in others he would begin forming a list of the places where he was sure to encounter difficulties and doing his best to research ways to overcome those. During this period he would also begin trying to make better use of his Pokémon, putting his Meowth into a kind of home-schooling and beginning Falconry-style exercises for his Rufflet. The end of the week would bring about the first deadline for turning-in stolen Pokémon that Armstrong had encountered which, easily identifiable target that he was, wasn't the most ideal of circumstances. Successfully pinching a couple of Pokémon from a liquored-up patron of the Game Corner, he was able to spirit them away before lending faux assistance to the man. Calling emergency services on his own crime allowed him to play the part of concerned citizen rather than crook and allowed him to get away with clean with a healthy enough take to meet his quota for the next month.

Pokémon Roster:
Sam (Rufflet): Was LV23 and leveled to LV31
Monday (Alolan Meowth): Was LV9 and leveled to LV15
Week 4

March 5th - March 11th:
The beginning of this week would be a surprising one, as Armstrong would find his former employee Monsoon had apparently been brought into the Pokémon world as well. Having been nearly entirely cybernetic prior to being spirited away the revelation that his colleague had been restored entirely to flesh-and-blood helped to confirm Armstrong's own suspicions that his augmented heart had been reverted back to normal. Bringing Monsoon as up-to-speed as he could about what the man was in for the pair. The two would spend the rest of the week digging-through yet-more books, as well continuing the exercises for Armstrong's Pokémon, while Monsoon worked towards refamiliarizing himself with the finer points of being organic again.

Pokémon Roster:
Sam (Rufflet): Was LV31 and leveled to LV39
Monday (Alolan Meowth): Was LV15 and leveled to LV20
Week 5

March 12th - March 18th:
With a month in the world now Armstrong was getting well-acquainted with the various ways that the world seemed to operate. Learning in-depth about Pokémon and their typings, the structure of the Pokémon League, any history he could, and the overall way that government operated in within the regions of Johto and Kanto meant that he could hold conversations with locals on equal footing and had a much better frame of reference for making decisions. Continuing with the schooling and training for his assigned Pokémon meant that he spent a lot of time in one place though, and that was something he felt could be utilized in a much more efficient manner. Turning his attention to the assignments Rocket had available once-more the chance to monitor Police activity stuck out to him as a way to both show productivity within the ranks of the ridiculous goon squad he'd been shanghaied into as well as learn how the way that local law enforcement conducted itself for his own personal use. Having signed up he was soon enjoying his regular routine of reading at cafeterias while simultaneously clocking-hours for Rocket, and the Police Scanner even allowed-him to expand its usefulness into his Meowth's schooling routines.

Pokémon Roster:
Sam (Rufflet): Was LV39 and leveled to LV47
Monday (Alolan Meowth): Was LV20 and leveled to LV25
Week 6

March 19th - March 25th:
At the rate that his training had been progressing both his Rufflet and Meowth were set to evolve near the end of the week and Armstrong was ready to have more physically capable Pokémon at his disposal than the ones he'd had to deal with up to that point. With business progressing as usual the priority for the week was mostly taking notes on the response time for "Goldenrod's finest". Meticulously tracking the speed of the response in comparison to the severity of the crime allowed him to develop various ideas on where and how to hit targets across the city while all-but-guaranteeing that the Jennies would be nowhere to be seen until well after any of his operatives were gone. This kind of information would be invaluable to the kind of scores that they'd need to rise through Rockets ranks, but it remained to be seen what level of usefulness the evolutions of his current squad would be. Right about the week's end the training would pay off, though, with Armstrong gaining both a Braviary and an Alolan Persian.

Pokémon Roster:
Sam (Rufflet): Was LV47 and leveled to LV55
(Evolved into Braviary)

Monday (Alolan Meowth): Was LV25 and leveled to LV30
(Evolved into Persian)
Week 7

March 26th - April 1st:
The beginning of the new week brought with an invitation to some manner of formal event, but Armstrong put that on the back burner for the time to focus on the newly evolved Pokémon he had to grapple with. Their advancement of form had brought with them a lot of advantages, but there were also some massively glaring problems that had arisen as well. Persian, despite having had full of use its hands in its previous form, was now entirely catlike in terms of its motor functions. Turning pages, picking-up items, and performing any of the myriad of functions it had previously undertaken were just flat-out off the table now, but trying to discover what usefulness it may still possess did successfully lead him to discover the functions of its "Payday" Move. That alone would make for an insane leap forward in wealth accumulation and functionally open the door to self-sufficiency for his entire group down the road, so Armstrong considered the evolution a win despite the step-backwards in terms of physical functionality. Braviary was a different story however, as it had undergone a massive increase in capability across the board. Were Armstrong of a smaller build he'd even have been in a good position to be able to mount the thing but, at his size, that was pretty much out of the question regardless of the Pokémon. Braviary's increased power had brought with it an equally large growth in terms of its aggression and attitude, however, and it was taking every opportunity to try asserting its dominance over its trainer. Armstrong was having none of it though, and things would end up becoming quite physical by the time the dust settled. The blood-thirsty bird may well thought itself the apex predator but some choice "discipline" at Armstrong's hands soon had it disillusioned as to the order of things. With his team now straightened-out Armstrong spent the remainder of the week making use of their new capabilities, learning the aerial excellence of his primary and making full-use of his feline companion's monkey-making abilities. With the deadline for Pokémon theft approaching again Armstrong was able to lean on Monsoon's deft fingers to liberate the necessary product to have them both in-the-clear.

Pokémon Roster:
Sam (Braviary): Was LV55 and leveled to LV63
Monday (Alolan Persian): Was LV30 and leveled to LV35
Week 8

March 26th - April 1st:
Settling-in to a routine once again Armstrong was able to focus himself on the upcoming Prom while his Pokémon did their thing. Persian was finally beginning to show progress in understanding ABCs and rudimentary written works were able to be tackled now, but actually speaking still seemed a long ways away. Payday was a Godsend in both terms of income and a way to let his Persian have a proper form of leveling but it was in the field of aviation that training was taking the biggest leaps forward. Braviary, having accepted Armstrong as leader of his lance for the time being, had discovered a near-junky level love of speed. Thriving off of the guidance given to him through his trainer's own aviation experience the Eagle was really starting to feel himself. With the makings of a stunt flier starting to show Armstrong's mind was quick to think of the boost such a skillset added to any operations he might spearhead in the future. Things were really starting to shape-up but, looking back at the present, Armstrong was all-but-positive that Rocket was going to have machinations for the upcoming Prom. Getting his I's dotted and T's crossed Armstrong sent out some cash to his trio to ensure they'd all be well-dressed and be well-prepared to the coming festivities. When the announcement went out on the 7th Armstrong was frankly stunned. Trying to influence an election live was the height of foolishness. To tilt the scales one way or the other for something like this you'd want to start work months in advance, and doing something as short-notice as this was just a recipe for causing people to be obvious or slapdash. Despite the ill-conceived operation the chance to indulge in some actually quality accommodations was much-appreciated. Living in a barracks room at Fifty was something he was entirely over so, despite the four-person nature of their lodgings, it was still a gift from above to be able to indulge in well-cooked food and gorgeous vistas. The Prom presented many opportunities to network, regardless of how the election was going, and despite being noisy the roommates he and Monsoon ended up being assigned seemed quite likely to prove useful in the future as well.

STEVEN ARMSTRONG
SENATOR FOR THE STATE OF COLORADO

YOUTH AND EARLY CAREER

Born in 1968 to a working-class Texan family, Steven Armstrong would be raised with the notions of selflessness and duty from a young age. On top of succeeding in his academic pursuits a young Armstrong would excel in sports, playing as Quarterback for his high school’s varsity team. Working hard in his studies he graduated and was accepted into the University of Texas, earning a football scholarship and setting the stage for a career in professional sports. The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait at the start of the 1990s would put these career plans on a permanent hold however, as Armstrong would be among the many other young Americans who heard the call to arms and stood against injustice. Entering service in the U.S. Navy would give Armstrong the ability to learn the importance of duty and honor, skills that would serve him well during his deployment in support of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Taking part in multiple support operations, he would be among the many Navy personnel that helped move the supplies and equipment needed for USTRANSCOM to initiate their surge. After the conclusion of the Gulf War Armstrong would continue his career in the Navy but would end up deployed overseas again soon afterward in support of the the US-led intervention in the Somalian Civil War. The Clinton Administration’s utter mishandling of the Battle of Mogadishu would show Armstrong how disposable a soldier's life was to his superiors, and open his eyes to the true character of America's ruling elite.

GLOBAL WAR ON TERROR

When the September 11th terrorist attacks took place in 2001 the world would be forever changed, and Armstrong would be among those mobilized in its immediate aftermath by Operation Enduring Freedom. Naval superiority would prove to be instrumental in establishing coalition dominance on the warfront, and the carrier-based campaigns of air strikes and bombing sorties demonstrated the marked advancements in such fields since the time of the Gulf War. The escalation in operations brought about by the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 would see a whole new front opened up and nearly 70,000 U.S. boots arrive on Iraqi soil. Beyond an escalation in hostilities, though, it would also give the now-experienced Armstrong the opportunity to truly make a difference through direct deployment alongside Americas allies.

Over the course of his tour Armstrong would learn much from working alongside the brave men and women of the coalition. He would make genuine and lifelong connections with many during his time on the front, and this experience would help to forge the enduring views he holds to this day. As the years drug on, though, the wheels of the American War machine began to spin. Popular opinion had turned against the ongoing military operations and the front itself had turned from a straightforward conflict between nations to a grueling guerrilla campaign against an entrenched force of insurgents. The military largely had its hands-tied by this point, and politicians and policy-makers back in Washington were more concerned with padding their approval ratings than giving their soldiers the resources needed to complete the mission. The continued hamstringing of military operations drew into sharp relief the effectiveness of Private Military Contractors, as time and time again their ability to execute the mission without waiting on governmental red-tape allowed them to emerge victorious in situations that would have resulted in disaster for other groups. This effectiveness set the bar for what a PMC could do compared to the eternally-shacked forces of a government's military in Armstrong's eyes and, upon his retirement from the Navy in 2010, would be something he immediately encountered in the civilian sphere as well.

AT HOME AND ABROAD

In his new home state of Colorado Armstrong would become a major proponent of budget reduction. The state capitol of Denver in particular had become bloated with ineffectual budgetary indulgences yet showed no results for the millions of taxpayer dollars it was spending. Armstrong was quick to point out the drastic difference in effectiveness between those areas of the city that had the benefit of private security and the state of perpetual lawlessness that existed in those that fell under the city's jurisdiction, even pointing to a security contractor based-out of the city itself as a perfect solution. When things only continued to get worse instead of better, Armstrong decided that he would need to become directly involved in government service once again.

Putting himself forward for the 2012 State Senatorial Election Armstrong ran on a platform of the very things he'd been espousing since retiring from the Navy, promising a return to peace and order. Compared to the career politicians that made up the rest of the election’s lineup the outspoken Texan was a breath of fresh air, and his consistency and outspokenness showed an honesty that the voters had sorely missed. Getting himself on the campaign trail he travelled across the state to get his message out, succeeding to such a degree that he was not only the obvious frontrunner but people had their eye on him for the possibility of a future presidential run. Not one to put the cart before the horse, though, Armstrong kept his eye on the task at hand and emerged victorious in the Senatorial Debates as well. When election day finally rolled around it was an unsurprising result for Coloradans to find Steven Armstrong was their newest State Senator.

After the chaos brought about by the Guns of the Patriot Incident in 2014 things took a nosedive. Violent crime saw an explosive increase and the removal of ID-tagged weapons meant that an unprecedented surge of weaponry was making its way onto the streets unchecked. With the state government powerless to stop the rise of crime Senator Armstrong once again pointed to his proposal to slash the bloated state budget and urged the state to finally accept the reality that all their continued mismanaging was doing was wasting taxpayer money. Backed by massive public support the state budget was finally reduced, shrinking by nearly half and easing the strain that ever-increasing taxes had put on Coloradans for the first time in decades. The reduced budget necessitated the privatization of various government functions, but Armstrong was ready for that as well. Pointing again to the now well-established Denver Private Security Firm of World Marshal, a contract was formed for the city's law enforcement responsibilities to be taken-over by their capable operators.

The change that World Marshal brought was almost overnight. Areas of the city that had been turned into virtual warzones were cracked-down on and the agitators apprehended, residential neighborhoods were able to return to a state of tranquility through the round-the-clock watch of World Marshal's surveillance systems, and thousands of jobs were infused into the Colorado economy through the burgeoning roster of security forces they maintained. Disabled veterans and injured officers who'd previously been discarded by society were able to be taken off the streets, given fulfilling jobs and life-changing medical treatments that got them back in the saddle, and returned to a position where they could once again serve and protect the people. The city saw a rebirth of epic proportions and all of America took notice.

With the success of the initiatives he'd spearheaded it was only natural for Senator Armstrong to throw his name in the hat when the 2016 Senatorial elections rolled around. Though his opponents took aim at his lack of political experience the success that he'd seen in Colorado had made him something of a household name overnight, and many an American was eager to see what the firebrand would do given the chance. Projections initially placed him as an unlikely winner but the gap would close day by day as the campaign season continued. By the time the polls closed on election day it was neck-and-neck, with Armstrong being the one to claim both victory and one of Colorado's two Federal Senate seats in Washington DC.

U.S. SENATE

In his new capacity the Senator would have the ability to speak his piece on a national stage. Despite the seniority of many of his fellows Armstrong would have little trouble navigating the intricacies of the political sphere. Conducting himself with aplomb and imparting the importance of the issues he spoke-on through his impassioned speeches he was someone for whom the American people could point to with pride as something a leader should be. As is the way with rising stars, though, it wasn't long until the old and the entrenched felt the need to tear him down. When a recording of Senator Armstrong disparaging the inaction of his peers and death of public morals was leaked to the internet in an attempt to discredit him, the powers-that-be used it as an excuse to launch an investigation into him regarding his connection to his longtime allies: World Marshal.

Publicly lambasting his detractors, Armstrong maintained his innocence and claimed that it was just a method for those looking to maintain the status quo to tear him him down. Espousing the many medical benefits that World Marshal represents through its cybernetics division the Senator took aim squarely at his seniors by stating that they just wanted to keep America hooked on mediocrity. His fiery resolution would only be further be vindicated when, upon the investigation's conclusion, he was cleared of all charges and this only further galvanized him that the core of American politics was rotten to the core. By 2018 he'd made up his mind that reshape the country into the greatness it once was meant uprooting the rot that had taken hold of it root-and-stem, and that the only way he could do that was by sitting in the Oval Office. Though yet to officially announce his candidacy, Senator Armstrong was considered a virtual shoe-in for the 2020 Presidential elections. Through his strength and leadership the decades of damage wrought by the Patriots could finally start to be undone and the first signs of a brighter tomorrow might just be able to take form.

LEGACY

This bright new day was not to be however, as Senator Steven Armstrong was one of many Americans killed during an unexpected Terrorist attack on Shabhazabad Air Base in Pakistan. In a single stroke a man that had sacrificed his entire life for the American people gave the ultimate sacrifice in their service, as his death gave President Hamilton the warning he needed to escape the ambush himself and ensured the spark of liberty would live to see another day. Armstrong's loss would not go unavenged, however, as the fires of war burned bright upon the news that America had lost one of her proudest sons. The same thirst for justice that had motivated a young Armstrong to serve his country almost three decades ago would now be passed to a whole new generation through his death. The tragic assassination of Senator Armstrong may have ensured that the status quo would continue for a while longer but the Old Sailor could rest at-ease knowing that his determination and fighting spirit would be carried on by a whole new generation.

PERSONALITY

Armstrong is a man who spent the majority of his life in-service to a government that he saw as noble and just, only to have this perception shattered and the rug pulled-out from under him when the Patriots’ decades of manipulation were brought to light. With the destruction of the Patriot AI systems the world was supposed to be free at last from the shackles of the Illuminati-like control that they’d languished under since the 80s but, rather than a new golden age, what resulted was a severe economic depression and criminal resurgence. Armstrong was at the forefront of governance in the United States at this time, and saw first-hand that social parasites came out of the woodwork to to take advantage of the chaos and prey upon those who were only trying to survive. Seeing those who’s duty it was to stand against this simply join in the feeding frenzy helped to confirm a fear that Armstrong had been entertaining for some time now; That America was rotten to the core.

Dedicating himself to the goal of uprooting the corrupt foundations of the United States, Armstrong began dipping his fingers into the burgeoning Private Military market and found people who had been hurt by the Patriots’ system but had the strength to come out the other side of their experiences stronger than they’d been before. Armstrong was a true believer in his cause, and could genuinely express the good that his endgame would bring about to those he brought in to his confidence. Though campy from the outside, his beliefs in restoring the government to something that actually served the people that elected it rather than one that preyed upon it was something many people agreed with. His success in politics was largely based upon this platform and, though he admits that he doesn’t write his own speeches, Armstrong has shown himself to be a natural orator on more than one occasion.

As a person Armstrong is passionate about nearly everything he invests himself into and has a strong sense of duty, but subscribes strongly to the “kill one - save a million” school of thought and so is willing to do a great many things that would be called terrible if he believes the ends will justify the means. This is well-summarized when he tells Raiden that “I’m making the mother of all omelettes here Jack. I can’t cry about every egg.” and sets the stage well for the many crimes he proceed to commit over the course of Metal Gear Rising. Though he’s content to let others do his wetwork Armstrong is a highly physical man, maintaining a physique comparable to a professional fighter in his 50s, and demonstrating impressive skill in hand-to-hand combat. His experience in the Navy seems to have made him comfortable in combat as well, and the technical skills he picked-up in his career have obviously been kept-sharp as he remains completely comfortable with both advanced weapon systems and near-future level electronics and appliances. Overall Armstrong is powerful person, both in terms of mind and body, and possesses a dangerous level of conviction towards his beliefs.

POWERS & ABILITIES

Even without taking-in an excess of nanomachines Steven Armstrong is a titan of a man. Though in his fifties he maintains a level of fitness and strength you would expect of a man half his years, something that was no doubt drilled into him through his football and military experience. Armstrong's build is similar to a professional powerlifter, and he seems to take pride in standing apart from the sea of geriatric lawyers and bureaucrats who make up the rest of the political sphere. Beyond simple strength, though, Armstrong possesses a keen mind for strategy, a vast knowledge of military hardware, and an impressive set of hand-to-hand fighting skills.

During both his battle with Jetstream Sam and Raiden he is shown to be quite at-ease in combat situations, which heavily suggests that he's seen his fair share of action despite never having been deployed to a combat zone. In every case of him receiving injuries, too, Armstrong's pain tolerance has been extraordinary which suggests a longstanding relationship with taking hits. Even when fully-infused with additional nanomachines he demonstrates a familiarity with the subsequent ability gain that suggests considerable practice, which goes against the extremely limited cases in which we actually see him fight. Overall this means it's likely that Armstrong has some form of training regimen used to keep him sharp, as both his physical and martial abilities amount to far more than the sum of their parts.

In combat Armstrong makes use of a combination of wrestling and boxing techniques. Flurries of jabs and devastating hooks are staples of the Senator's repertoire, but grapples also punctuate each and every combo with lethal effectiveness. Should Armstrong get his hands on an opponent there's little chance they will break away without being placed into a variety of punishing submission holds. Moves ranging in scope from from Greco-Roman throws to Sumo takedown permeate his moveset, making him and unpredictable and deadly combatant. In terms of defensive abilities Armstrong predominantly leans on his overwhelming strength, relying more on his ability to simply shrug-off most hits rather than trying to dodge or deflect them. That isn't to say that he lacks for combat reflexes though, as there are numerous examples of him countering moves that would have laid a lesser man out with alarming alacrity. From deflecting a knife mid-throw to catching a sword in mid-swing the Senator still possesses the speed and senses of a younger man.
